Meet Kim Barlow

The story behind
the book

I grew up in Johannesburg, where the fierce lightning storms of the highveld mirrored the chaos inside my childhood home.

Violence. Abuse. Suicide attempts. Chaos.

I learnt that the very things meant to break us can become the foundation of our Inner Strength.

What I Discovered

Years later, I ran a journalism programme for delinquent girls in a Cape Town detention centre.

I saw that same truth in their eyes.

They were only 13 to 16. They had survived rape, brutal beatings, and lost parents to drugs. They had also committed murder, arson, and robbery.

Week after week, as we wrote, I saw we all wanted peace. But peace requires strength. The kind of strength that makes you believe you are worthy despite the lies your circumstances create. This kind of strength is called Inner Strength.   

Those girls weren’t just learning to write. They were rewriting what was possible for their lives.

And so was I.

Why I Wrote How to Build Your Inner Strength 
That realisation became the seed for my book.
For over fifteen years, I’ve told stories for NGOs, governments, and international organisations, but this is my most personal work.

It’s for anyone who’s ever wondered:

  • Am I strong enough to survive my own story?
  • Am I courageous enough to rewrite it?

The Inner Strength System for Real Change 
The book and guided journal exist because inspiration alone isn’t enough.
Real strength-building requires daily practice, consistent tools, and support that meets you where you are, not where you think you should be.
